on the road |
This body of photographic collages emerged in 2009-2010 as a personal inquiry into what organizes our perception of reality and, thus, how we create meaning. It was inspired by the intersection of truths from the Andean Tiwantinesuyu cosmology, writings by philosopher and mystic Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and a "blue highways" road trip between our home in California and Montana, which my family and I took bi-annually for more than 20 years.
Rather than subscribing to the illusion of duality (this or that) — the Andean worldview acknowledges that everything including thoughts, emotions and actions have a complementary opposite (this and that). In their belief system, we derive "meaning" from our conscious and unconscious relationship with both expressions. As seen through this body of work, understanding our present and "ordinary reality" (central image) is wholly influenced by our relationship to the "feminine" qualities of feelings, sensations, daydreams, and the collective unconscious (left image) and the "masculine" qualities portrayed as memories, thoughts, and visual metaphors related to past experiences (right image). The degree to which we favor the "feminine" and "masculine" qualities in any given moment shapes our sense of meaning and determines the character of our relationships and engagements. The coming together of these visual experiences in each piece provides insight into what organized my perceptions of reality during that time and invites the viewer to contemplate their own. Each image is a limited edition archival inkjet print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper. Most images are 16"x34". There are only ten signed and numbered prints of each image. |
